Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) Cyber Grand Challenge
Raytheon took fourth place in the DARPA Cyber Grand Challenge, which aimed to automatically detect and fix systems’ vulnerabilities in a Capture The Flag format without human interaction. "DeepRed," Raytheon's official team name, was a nod to both Raytheon's red logo and the famous Deep Blue supercomputer created by International Business Machines (IBM).
After beating out more than 100 other teams in preliminary rounds, the team competed in the final competition at DEF CON, a hacker convention held in August 2016 in Las Vegas. DeepRed was the only finalist from industry, going up against academic research teams in the contest.
